The Immortal 600
My husband's 2nd great grandfather was one of the Immortals. If you don't know about the Immortals, then I respectfully ask that you take the time to educate yourselves. Perhaps the mod can post a link to some information, I can't.
2nd Lt. Alexander Hinton Brown, Co H, 30th NC Infantry, was an Immortal survivor. At the tender age of 18, he joined his country's fight. Wounded at Gettysburg, he spent a month in the hospital and on furlough and then rejoined the fight. He was captured at Kelly's Ford, VA. That is when his nightmare began.
The suffering that these brave men experienced at the hand of the U.S. government was indescribable. Denied food, medicine and clothing. Used as human shields. Everyone has heard of Andersonville, but few have heard of the Immortals. Share this story every time you have a chance.
Hurrah for Southern Rights.

Re: The Immortal 600
I have read in one text that the rations and care being received by the prisoners of the South shrank because of the blockade made by the North preventing the South from receiving food and medical supplies. And that the North did not care for the Union soldiers who were either captured by the South or surrendered to the South.
The South also treated Union prisoners with respect but the Union treated badly its Confederate prisoners.
The Immortals were used by the Union as human shields, correct?

Yes. They were placed in front of the shelling at Charleston. The North said it was in retaliation for the South threatening to the same, but there is absolutely no evidence of that. The North put the Immortals on starvation rations of one moldy piece of cornbread and two tablespoons of pickle juice a day for much of their incarceration. They were denied medicine and medical care. Some froze to death because they were denied blankets. Sometimes they would catch and eat stray cats that wandered into camp. Many died and within the first couple of years after the war was over, many others died from wounds and disease directly attributable to the deplorable conditions they suffered.thomascgty wrote:I have read in one text that the rations and care being received by the prisoners of the South shrank because of the blockade made by the North preventing the South from receiving food and medical supplies. Not only were Northern prisoners disadvantaged by their own army through the blockades, the South offered prisoner exchanges when they saw that they couldn't take care of these POWs. The North refused, essentially condemning their own soldiers to death.
